What is a talent MCP server, and why would you want one?

An MCP server for talent is a tool your AI assistant can call to search for engineers while you are already talking to it about the gap in your team. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol, an open standard that lets assistants such as Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code and Codex connect to outside systems and use them mid-conversation. HI Talent MCP is one of these. It searches an anonymised pool of more than 3,000 engineers, it is free to use, and it takes about a minute to connect.

What an MCP server actually is

Most AI assistants can only work with what is in front of them. An MCP server changes that by exposing a set of tools the assistant is allowed to call, so it can go and fetch something, search something or act on something outside its own context. The assistant decides when to reach for the tool based on what you are asking about.

The protocol itself is open and now supported fairly widely, which is why the same server can be added to Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Perplexity, Windsurf and LM Studio without anyone building a separate integration for each one.

Why hiring suits the format

The conversation about a resourcing gap tends to happen somewhere already. You are working through an architecture problem in Claude, or staring at a service in your IDE that nobody left on the team understands, and the realisation that you need another pair of hands arrives in the middle of that. The context is all sitting there, the stack, the constraints, the thing that is actually hard about the work.

The traditional next step is to leave that context behind, write a job description that flattens it into a list of technologies, and hand the flattened version to someone external. An MCP server lets you skip that step and search from where you already are, with everything you know still attached.

If you connect it to your IDE, the assistant can read the code in question before it searches. Pointing at a legacy payment gateway and asking who could help migrate off it is a more precise brief than anything you would have written by hand.

How HI Talent MCP works

There are three stages to it, and none of them require a job description.

You describe the situation in plain English or simply ask in an existing LLM chat, including the stack, the problem, the seniority you need, the timezone overlap you want and what you can spend.

The MCP then searches on what people have actually done. Every profile in the pool is built from technical problems the engineer has solved, with the scale and the outcome kept intact, so matching runs on that evidence rather than on the skill tags someone typed into a CV.

From there you can ask your assistant to assess the fit, open a full profile, ask about availability and pricing, or have us arrange an introduction. Onboarding typically runs to seven days from that point.

Matching on problems solved rather than skill tags

This is the part that changes the game. A skill tag tells you someone has written the word Terraform on a document. A record of provisioning a full cloud estate, covering networking, compute, identity, storage, databases, load balancing, monitoring and autoscaling, all automated through Terraform and Ansible, with key outcomes tells you something you very different

It also lets the assistant be useful about the gaps that a candidate may have. If a strong candidate has never managed anyone, that is worth knowing before you get as far as an introduction, and your LLM will say so rather than smoothing it over like a recruiter might be tempted to do.

What you get out of it

Search is in natural language, so you can refine by seniority, geography and budget in the same thread without touching a filter. Profiles are anonymised, identified by a reference such as HI-ENG-KE9ENE, with sign-in only required when you want to open a full profile. The pool sits at over 3,000 engineers and is updated daily.

When nothing in the pool fits, it tells you so instead of padding the list with near misses, and offers a bespoke search instead. An empty result saves you reviewing five people who were never going to work.

The whole thing is free to use, including the hiring part.

What it does not do

It will not run your interview process, it will not tell you whether you should be hiring at all, and it cannot see anything about your business. It is a search and evaluation tool sitting inside your existing assistant.

Connecting it

There is a one-click extension for Claude Desktop and deep links for Cursor, VS Code and LM Studio. For anything else you add a remote MCP server pointing at:

https://talent.hitechnology.io/mcp

There’s no key or token to enter. Claude Code and Codex both take a single terminal command. Check your current assistant for information on how to add an MCP or head over to talent.hitechnology.io.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be technical to use it? No. The search runs on plain English descriptions of your problem. Being able to describe the stack helps, but you do not need to write queries.

Is HI Talent MCP free? Yes, it is free to use as much as you want.

Which assistants support it? Claude, Cursor, VS Code, Claude Code, Codex, Copilot, Perplexity, Windsurf and LM Studio. Some LLM providers do require pro accounts for MCP access.

What happens to my search data? See the privacy page for how searches and sign-ins are handled.

  • The team at HI enabled Lightfoot to rapidly scale development with minimal support from internal dev resources. They led well-controlled stakeholder engagement to capture product requirements, applying extensive technical experience to shape the solutions, whilst maintaining consideration of other business criteria such as budget. Agile projects were then run by the HI project and development teams, with stakeholder reviews along the way. A secondary benefit was working with them to improve internal development and DevOps workflows.
